CFDs are complex instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. Between 51% and 89% of retail investor accounts lose money when trading CFDs. You should consider whether you understand how CFDs work and whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money.

Regulation

BlackBull Markets vs. Questrade: safety at a glance. ForexBrokers.com assigns BlackBull Markets a Trust Score of 77/99, which falls into the “average risk” band (70–79), while Questrade scores 85/99, placing it in the “trusted” band (80–89). For context, scores of 90–99 are highly trusted, 60–69 are high risk, and under 59 should not be trusted.

On regulatory footing, both online brokers hold one Tier-1 license (considered highly trusted) and zero Tier-2 licenses. Neither company is publicly traded or a bank. Questrade was founded in 2000, whereas BlackBull Markets began in 2014—helpful background if you weigh operating history alongside licensing and Trust Scores when comparing brokers.

Fees

BlackBull Markets comes out ahead of Questrade on commissions and fees overall. BlackBull’s trading costs are about average for the industry, but they can be quite competitive on its Prime account, which had an average EUR/USD spread of 0.16 pips in March 2024, or about 0.76 pips all in after commission. The Standard account has no commission and no minimum deposit, while the Prime account requires a $2,000 deposit and charges $3 per side, and the ECN Institutional account is aimed at active traders with at least $20,000 to deposit, with $2 per side commissions. BlackBull Markets is rated 4.5/5 stars and ranks #9 out of 36 brokers for commissions and fees.

Questrade, by contrast, uses a spread-based pricing model, so its trading costs are built into the bid-ask spread rather than charged as a separate commission. Questrade says spreads can start as low as 0.8 pips in normal market conditions, but observed spreads on major forex pairs were closer to 2.1 to 2.5 pips, which can make trading more expensive in practice. For CFDs, the pricing can also add up quickly because Questrade charges a $9.95 USD trading fee per unit on top of the spread, and overnight financing costs may apply as well. Questrade is rated 3.5/5 stars and ranks #34 out of 36 brokers in the commissions and fees category.

In simple terms, BlackBull Markets is the better choice if you want lower trading costs, especially for forex. Questrade may be easier to understand at first because its pricing is built into the spread, but its wider spreads and CFD trading fees can make it more expensive overall. For traders who care most about saving on commissions and fees, BlackBull Markets has the edge.
